Wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles...

Well. Wonder of wonders. There was nothing, nothing at all about tonight's episode that I disliked. I suppose it could have done with just a bit more Sam, but what there was of him packed such a punch, it made up for the conspicuous lack of Sammy-time. I suppose I'm just a teeny, tiny bit annoyed that the boys' reunion was so much on Dean's terms, but that was made up for in spades by (miracle of miracles) Dean admitting he was wrong.

I may have Fiddler on the Roof stuck in my head.

Anyway. Is it just me, or is Show kind of at its best when it's doing timetravel of one sort or another? I mean, maybe it is just me, but some of my favorite episodes of the whole series are Mystery Spot and In the Beginning, and I do believe The End just earned its way up there, too.

Whatever, though. I liked everyone, this ep. Everyone. Any and all issues that I regularly have with various characters? Gone. I liked Dean. I liked Castiel. I liked Zachariah. Hell yes, did I like Lucifer -- but then, how could anyone not like him, looking like that? And I liked him before, anyway. So there.

Both past!Dean and future!Dean were surprisingly sympathetic. Past!Dean was adorable, being all lost and confused, and genuinely not trying to make trouble for his future self, but not being able to help himself. And future!Dean was all broken. I mean, even more than present!Dean, which is quite a trick. Also. The two Deans showed an understanding of one another that often seems to be missing in stories where different versions of the same character meet. And the reminiscing about the panties did get a laugh out of me.

I'm gonna say upfront that I'll never be a Castiel fangirl, but I sort of adored him tonight. I loved him attempting to keep his dignity while shouting into a cheap cellphone on the side of the road. I loved him not actually having anywhere to go, anything to do but stay dumped on that roadside when Dean didn't want to see him. I loved human!Castiel, all drugged out, giggling at stuff. I... have to wonder, though: if Castiel was human, what happened to Jimmy? As much as Show is concentrating on the human cost of all the other angels' hosts (particularly Michael and Lucifer, for obvious reasons), they're doing an oddly good job of forgetting/ignoring that Castiel is wearing Jimmy to the prom in just the way that Lucifer wants to wear Sam. I dunno.

As for Zachariah... Really, what I usually dislike about him is not even how sleazy he is, but how crude. The writers are clearly trying to get him to come across as inappropriately flippant, but almost every time we've seen him, he's been inappropriate in very much the way of an adolescent boy trying to show that he's just as tough and worldly as an adult. Tonight, he was flippant, but not obnoxious. It was a nice change, and I really hope they keep it up.

And Lucifer!Sam. Ah, yes. I could rhapsodize, but I think that might be a bit... redundant. \o/ I think we should just take my glee as read, and move on to a related topic. Which is: wow, how much ya wanna bet that the writing staff at SPN Central have a reference shelf of Neil Gaiman's stuff? Sandman in particular. There were a couple of lines there that were awful close to some of the stuff Gaiman's Lucifer said at various points (particularly at the closing of Hell). All I can say is: They have wonderful taste. Keep it up.

Finally, the reunion. Perhaps a tad anticlimactic, but whatever. The boys are back together, and thank god the lesson Dean learned wasn't: let's destroy Lucifer (and most of the world) before Sam can say yes. Rather, it's that Dean needs to stick with Sam so that he never does say yes. So that Sam can stay Sam, and, incidentally, so that Dean can stay Dean.

It's kind of weird that this ep is leaving me more with a feeling of happy contentment, rather than wild squee. I dunno. I like it, though, I really do. It's pretty much shot up onto my personal Top 5 Episodes of Supernatural list. (Let's see, in rough order, those would be: Mystery Spot, Born Under a Bad Sign, When the Levee Breaks, The End, and In the Beginning.)

But yeah. I'm really hoping that this future timeline spawns at least as much fic as What Is and What Will Never Be. More Lucifer!Sam is always welcome. And I'd like to know why Sam said yes in Detroit.

Now, bed. Cause I stayed up to download and watch and then write this, but I'm starting not to be able to understand what I just wrote.
