So, I was going to do an ep reaction for 6x03, but it started turning into a rather long-winded meta, and I got sidetracked in the middle, and now I'm just too tired of the damn thing even to look at it. And this is a much more interesting topic, anyway.
So, clearly, something is very much up with Sam. I've looked around a bit, and the prevailing theory in fandom at the moment seems to be that he's running around without his soul. I actually tend to think this is the most likely explanation. The same thought occurred to me watching 6x03, so I can definitely buy that the writers are hinting in that direction. I imagine that we'll discover at some point this season that Sam's soul is still down in the Pit, or that someone or something took it in exchange for getting him out of the cage.
It even makes a kind of sense that his soul might still be down there: Sam -- and Adam -- fell bodily into Hell. But Hell isn't a physical place. It seems reasonable that Sam's body might get squirted back up onto Earth in the same working condition in which it left, but that Sam's soul would have a harder time getting out. But, then, what about Adam?
But anyway, the likelihood of the soul theory aside, I had kind of an interesting idea that I haven't seen anywhere.
First off, let's list out what we know (or "know") about this season:
1. Sam and Samuel were resurrected at them same time, both without any explanation. Everyone seems to be working on the assumption that the same thing was responsible for both.
2. There are a whole slew of monsters that are walking around, acting noticeably out of character.
3. Samuel (with or without Sam's knowledge: that's still not clear) is going around collecting monsters.
4. Sam is walking around, acting noticeably out of character.
5. Sam is working with, and possibly for, Samuel.
Well then.
The writers have been hinting halfheartedly throughout the series that Sam might not be 100% human. They all but told us outright with the flickering streetlamp in 5x22. So, what, then, if Sam is one of the monsters Samuel has collected? Whatever is causing the monsters to act oddly might be causing Sam to act the way he is.
Once again, I sincerely doubt the writers will go in this direction. Much more likely, the monsters this season are, as they always do, mirroring the brothers.
That being said, I will smile like an idiot if this actually happens. And I want it recorded here for posterity.
