Hm. So, my record of really enjoying the time-travel episodes remains unbroken. And Sam was actually in this one. As Sam. How refreshing. Even if he did get killed. Again. HE REALLY NEEDS TO STOP DOING THAT.
Michael was kind of an awesome creep. Although, I have to wonder. He says he still loves Lucifer. He says he doesn't want to fight Lucifer. He does not appear to care in any personal way for humans-in-general/Sam'n'Dean-in-particular. Sam was DEAD. Why not just leave well enough alone? As Anna so pragmatically pointed out, a dead Sam = a stalled apocalypse.
And speaking of Anna. Huh. I've never really liked Anna. Well, alright, I liked her well enough in I Know What You Did Last Summer. But then came Heaven and Hell, and, well, since then there hasn't been a lot to like. But still. One more female character, dead, right on schedule. I actually thought they were going to kill Mary (again), then kill Anna, then bring Mary back to life, so that she could die (again). I'm glad they didn't do that, and yet the fact remains. They've made yet another female character into a psycho, then killed her. And now, the only female character left (the only female character left) is Meg. Who, I think we can all agree, is both psycho and dead meat by the end of the season. *sigh*
Oh, god. Never mind. I gripe, and yet it was a good ep. I got to see Sam get some closure with his daddy. I got to see Sam'n'Dean make a rather impassioned argument for never being born at all. I got to see John on the road to being Badass Daddy Winchester. I got to see Mary actually be Badass Mommy Winchester. I got to see Castiel refer to Sam as his friend, which, okay, was kinda random, since there's been precious little friendship going on between those two, but still. Just the fact that he said it and apparently meant it led me feel the first hint of real affection for him in a long while. And he was so cute, lying to Sam about Anna's plan actually being a valid one. Oh, and that tag at the end, with John and Mary in the nursery, and the angels watching over Dean? Creepy!
Anyway, good stuff. I still hope, though, that they're going to finish this whole angel/apocalypse story by the end of the season. I actually found it difficult to remember, during all this family interaction, that Sam and Dean were brothers. Maybe it's all the J2 fic messing with my head, but I think it really has more to do with how the two of them being brothers hasn't really been something the show's been interested in emphasizing in a while. And here I am complaining again. Ignore me. Please.
