So, I'm thinking I'm with Sam on this one (as usual): Clearly Dean has never met the guy in his life. Let's recap, shall we?
What has Sam wanted most from his life? If your answer is anything but "The ability to make his own decisions," then clearly you've never met Sam Winchester. What was Dean's response to Sam's decision to drink demon blood? Lock Sam up without his consent.
What has Sam always wanted most from Dean? If your answer is anything but "Trust and respect," then clearly you've never met Sam Winchester. What was Dean's response to Sam's plea for trust? A simple, unadorned "No."
What is Sam's response to ultimatums? If your answer is anything but "He calls them," then clearly you've never met Sam Winchester. What was Dean's response to Sam doing something Dean didn't want him to do? He gave Sam exactly the same ultimatum that John quite disastrously used over the whole Stanford thing.
So, I'm thinking Dean has never met Sam Winchester.
I mean: Alright. The demon blood is bad. I'm finally willing to concede it. Sam either needs to figure out how to control the addiction, or he needs to get it out of his system, somehow. I'm sympathetic to Dean's desire to save Sam's life and humanity. That being said, he went about the whole thing in the worst possible way that he could have come up with in a THOUSAND YEARS. I mean, if he were trying to shoot himself in the foot, he couldn't have done a better job.
Really, though, this is kind of a continuation of what appears to be a theme this season, to whit: Dean never actually did know much of anything about Sam. I mean, yes, Dean has repeatedly been able to predict Sam's actions because he "knows him better than anyone." And yet. In Sex and Violence, Dean is given a fantasy brother to replace Sam. The fantasy brother in no way at all resembled Sam, as he is or as he had ever been. During the confrontation between the brothers in that episode, Dean
Um. Hello? Has Dean ever met Sam Winchester, the secretive, closed-mouthed, obsessive bastard with a tendency to go off and do his own thing that we've known and loved since Season 1? Sam defied his family and went off to do his own thing at Stanford. Sam didn't tell Jess about the things that go bump in the night, and left to do his thing with Dean without telling her anything. Sam didn't tell Dean about the visions until he had to in order to get Dean to cooperate with him. When Dean was more interested in hunting than looking for John, Sam went off on his own. Sam didn't tell John about the visions till he had to. When he wanted to look for psy!kids, he went off on his own. Sam never did tell Dean about the YED's blood. Sam didn't tell Dean about Lilith until Ruby spilled the beans. When Dean told Sam (repeatedly) not to look for a way out of Dean's deal, he went ahead anyway. He specifically went off to do his own thing in Long Distance Call, and Time Is On My Side. In No Rest For The Wicked, he summoned Ruby, even though Dean had expressly forbidden it. I'm sure I'm forgetting plenty of examples. Sam has always been secretive and prone to going off to do his own thing. If Dean thinks that anything has actually changed in that regard, then he's just fooling himself that he knows anything at all about Sam.
Anyway, in other news, it makes me sad that Ruby is apparently going to be a bad guy. I mean, I knew it was likely, but I hoped. I guess the best I can hope for now is that they make her interestingly bad. Could still be that she's working for the YED, beyond the grave. I'd be quite happy with that. Meanwhile, I am mildly (mildly!) intrigued by the angels. Still don't give a flying fig about Anna, though.
Let's see, anything else? Hm. Loved Sam's hallucinations. Terribly sad to learn that Sam's doing all this because he thinks he's already a monster. I was terribly glad to see Alistair again, even if it was to torture poor Sammy. Oooh, oooh! And Yellow-Eyed Sammy was awesome.
I'm not sure I'm going to make it to next Thursday.
