Geekitude

When you come right down to it, I am a geek. Specifically, I'm a geek who loves lists. Kind of always have been. When I was, say, about eleven, I decided to pull out a notebook and make a list of all the books I owned, title and author. For the record, I'm pretty sure the number hovered around 800. Yeah, I had a lot of books. But, see, knowing how many books I had, and which books they were, and where I had them stored (I had so many, I had to be rather creative in regards to storage) wasn't enough. I had to know how many pages they all had, and how much that added up to. So I spent days going through every book I owned, writing down the page count, and then even more days going through with a calculator adding it all up. And then I wanted to know how many words that was, so I started trying to come up with an estimated wordcount per page. Looking back on it, I might have been (and might still be) just a little OCD.

When I got my first computer, and discovered spreadsheets and databases, well. Things started getting a little out of hand.

Then I got into fanfic and discovered del.icio.us. My obsession with tagging is actually a little frightening.

In the spirit of my obsession, I spent a couple of days going through the upcoming Big Bang descriptions and posting dates, and created a database of the ones that I thought looked interesting. I'm currently resisting the temptation to start creating multiple tables and adding several new fields of descriptors, like: Have I read anything by that author before? If so, did I like what I read enough to save it to delicious? If not, did I like it, but just not enough to save it? Am I interested in reading the fic because the description sounds good, regardless of the author, or am I willing to look at it because I trust the author regardless of whether I found the description interesting? Or is it a fic with an interesting description written by an author I trust? Am I really eager to read the fic, or is it just something I'll take a look at? And so on.

But anyway. My point is that I figured out how many Big Bangs I'm currently planning on at least attempting to read (112, for the record). And that got me thinking. I still have a bookmark folder filled with fics (mostly Supernatural and CWRPF) that I want to read but haven't had a chance to get around to. The folder is quite large. I'll never ever lack reading material. But, I knew that a few of the fics in that folder were Big Bangs from previous years. So, I decided to go through and tag all them, to see how many. It took all night, but I finally discovered that I still have 38 Big Bangs from 2009, and 11 from 2008 bookmarked and waiting to be read.

But figuring out how many I had waiting to be read was not enough. It got me thinking: how long would it take me to actually read all of those? And wordcounts are much more useful in figuring that out than just numbers of fics (after all, a fic of 100,000 words would take considerably longer than one of 20,000). So I went through every one of the Big Bangs that I have bookmarked, and put the wordcounts into a spreadsheet (separate columns for 2009 and 2008), and added it all up. I have 2,158,612 words (give or take, since most of the given wordcounts are approximate, and even I'm not obsessed enough to go through all of them to get accurate counts, even with my handy-dandy wordcount addon for Firefox) worth of fic to read. In addition to the 112 fics (minimum of 20,000 words each, so a minimum of 2,240,000 words total, with an absolute guarantee that pretty much every single one of them will be over the minimum, with many of them being considerably over) for this year.

And still my obsessive geekery is not satisfied. I have read that the average mass market paperback holds an approximate average of about 300 words per page. My own investigations (which involve pulling random books from my shelf, counting the words from a random line on a random page, and multiplying it by the number of lines on the page) suggest something closer to somewhere between 400 and 500 words per page. In the spirit of compromise, I decided to divide the wordcounts by 400. Which means that for previous years' Big Bangs, I have approximately 5,397 pages worth of fic to read. At an average of perhaps 400 pages per novel, that's about 13.5 novels. For this year, there will be a minimum of 14 novels worth of material. If I assume that the average wordcount for this year will be similar to last year, and that the 49 wordcounts that I currently have in my spreadsheet offer at least a semi-valid sample, then the average wordcount will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 44,053 per fic. So, for 112 fics, that's 4,933,970 words. Which boils down to about 31 novels.

This has actually been kind of embarrassing. I swear, I'm not actually obsessive compulsive. Except possibly where it comes to my delicious tags -- 16 bundles holding 1,498 tags might be a little excessive for most people, particularly given how often I feel compelled to go back through my 800 bookmarks to add entirely new descriptors.

And for those of you playing at home, this post has been 957 words long.

Random thought for the night: Jensen Ackles is much prettier than Dean Winchester. This is somewhat inexplicable, but true. Jared Padalecki, on the other hand, is mind-bogglingly, mouth-wateringly hot both as himself and Sam Winchester, but the hotness factor ratchets up to 11 when he's Lucifer. This is not really all that inexplicable, but just as true.

SPN 5x22

So, I suppose I should just go ahead and do my post on the SPN S5 finale.
5x22 )

God. Between this and class, my brain is officially fried. And also, this has pretty well run longer than some of the codas I've read in the last week. And I still have more to say. And I will, inevitably, say it. Tomorrow. After finishing up my game of Civilization.

I didn't get to watch the SPN finale in real time. This makes me quite sad. Why do I always end up with Thursday night classes? Tonight was the first class for Business Econ, and the dude took up every last minute of his three hours and ten minutes. Plus a few. So class didn't even end until after nine. I didn't get home, with one thing and another, until after ten. So no spn in real time. Not that I could have watched it anyway. Life interfered with me seeing 5x21 last week, and I kinda decided that, all things considered, it would be better to spare myself the suspense of the no-doubt heart-wrenching semi-finale, and just watch the two back to back. Which I'll just be doing anyway. So whatever. Just. I didn't even get the option. :(

Today was a good day, anyway. Aside from class, I also got my hair done, got my ears pierced again, and went to lunch/dinner with L.

I got my hair a lot shorter than I usually do -- usually it's an even just-above-shoulder length, and now it's just-below-chin length in front and just-above-neck length in back. I think it looks good. We'll have to see how it looks once I've washed and brushed it myself -- it always looks so much different than when the hair dresser does it.

I finally decided to just go for it, and got a third set of piercings in my ears. I love earrings, and any excuse to wear more of them is good by me. I got it done in an actual piercing parlor, as opposed to the previous three piercings (including the one that ended in disaster), which I just got done at those kiosks in the mall. This one, he did the piercing by hand, rather than with a gun, and it hurt quite a bit more. The last two mostly just felt like bee stings, although I remember the first one hurting about that much. I can't be sure about that, though: it was a long time ago, I was only ten, and my pain threshold was considerably lower. Also, that was the one that got a horrible infection. Could be I was already reacting (though I doubt it). Anyway, I now have a serviceable pair of hoops in my ears, and they're gonna be there for a couple of months, minimum. And my ears don't heal quickly, so it may be a bit longer than that. But, yay for more piercings. Though these will likely be my last. I might get one more in the cartilage of my ear(s), but that's it. I don't have any desire for bits of metal in any other part of my body.

Lunch went pretty well, I thought. L continues to be awesome, and she seems to like me, which, yay for me. We were eating in the Panera downstairs from my classroom so that I could duck out at the last possible second, and we got so caught up in a discussion of games and comic book movies, that I still managed to be late. That's a good sign, I think.

That was my day. It was a good day. And I will no doubt have more to say once I've seen 5x21 and 5x22. Just have to wait for for the latter to be put up.
tarod45: Sam in a mirror (dreamland)
So, I took my SCM final this morning, and was absolutely shocked to discover that I actually knew what the fuck I was doing. Kind of a new and exciting feeling when it comes to my accounting classes.

Also new and exciting is my new-found enthusiasm for Sam/Castiel. Well, not so much new-found, really. I've been fond of at least the idea of the pairing ever since the angel first made his appearance. It's just that, until 5x14, what little interaction Sam and Castiel had was distinctly hostile, and until 5x18, Castiel has always been entirely too focused on and taken with Dean for me to be able to really buy him with Sam. However, I found Castiel's big scene with Dean in 5x18 (you know the one) to be cathartic in the extreme, and my affection for the angel currently knows no bounds.

And, I may have read With Nothing (Left) Up my Sleeve by [livejournal.com profile] fakeplasticsnow, which was utterly awesome, and really let me believe that the pairing is plausible post-5x17.

Finally, I had an odd dream last night. It took the form a fic, and it began like this:

Big Bangs

tarod45: Sam in a mirror (dreamland)
So Big Bang season is coming. I've seen hints of what various authors are planning, and I want to try to keep track of the stories that I'll be wanting to check out. I mean, obviously, I'm going to have a more complete list when the summaries are posted in May, but a) I'm impatient; and b) summaries don't always catch my attention. So, yeah, this is kind of a convenient place to list a few authors to keep an eye on in the months to come.

[livejournal.com profile] lazy_daze
[livejournal.com profile] aggybird
[livejournal.com profile] xela_fic

More to come, probably. And, of course, I'll likely end up with an entirely different list when the summaries come out and I find out what some of these authors are actually doing, and how many of these authors actually finish.
tarod45: (i think not.)
So, I stopped reading comics regularly a couple of years ago. I had a number of reasons, most of them practical. But part of it was that I just wasn't having fun reading them anymore.

Comics, done right, are the like the perfect distillation of character over plot. Plots come and go, and are generally pretty irrelevant in the scheme of things. The characters endure, and this past decade or so, most of what comics have been about is how the characters react to the various irrelevant plots. Add in some characters that I genuinely like and care about, and it's like a never-ending dream come true. Endless character development. And I had a fairly substantial list of characters that I did care about. Still care about, if I'm honest.

Lately, though... well, since round about the time of Identity Crisis, which wasn't actually all that recently at this point, it's started to feel like the comics industry has become a competition to see who can assassinate characters the fastest. I don't get it. The point of me reading comics was that I cared about the characters. Why on earth would I want to read the comics if the characters I like are dropping like flies? On top of that, characters are basically all DC and Marvel have. Yes, yes, they also have premises, but I don't want to read about some dude who's bitten by a radioactive spider unless it's Spider-Man. And by Spider-Man, I mean Peter Parker. And more specifically, I want Peter Parker, the thirty-something husband of Mary-Jane. Now, over at DC, I don't mind that Bruce is supposedly dead and Batman is now Dick Grayson, both because I know and like Dick, and I also know that it's not going to stick. On the other hand, DC has been particularly egregious when it comes to turning its books into pointless bloodbaths. It's as if the current administration there (read: Didio and Johns) somehow believe that no one will like their books unless there's a huge body count in every single issue.

The example that springs to mind is the Trickster. James was a long-standing, though minor, character. He'd been moldering along in obscurity quite nicely, brought out every now and again when someone thought of him, and hey, I really liked what Johns did with him over in The Flash. Granted, the Rogue War devolved into utter nonsense by the end, but I liked the way the old Rogues were brought back out of retirement. Then, it turns out that James and Piper are going to be major characters in Countdown to Final Crisis. And, frankly, they were the most entertaining part of that gigantic trainwreck. And then, BOOM. Trickster's dead. For absolutely no reason except shock value.

Same thing with Una and Karate Kid. There was no reason for them to die. When you get right down to it, there was no reason for them to have been alive at all to begin with, let alone a reason to kill them. Trying to figure out a Crisis timeline that would allow Karate Kid to be alive at all is enough to make my head hurt, and I have to figure it out, since nobody bothered to explain it. He'd died before the original Crisis - his death shouldn't have been undone by any of the subsequent Crises. And yet, inexplicably, it was. And he was, with no explanation at all, brought back to life to take part in a boring and completely nonsensical storyline... where he died. What the hell was the point of that? If they wanted him dead... he was already dead! It seems that the only reason for him to be there at all was so that they could kill him. Why? If we care about the character, we want to see him live and have future adventures. If we don't care about him, and indeed weren't supposed to care about him, why waste our time?

So, yeah, it annoys me when they kill minor characters for shock value. But what really gets me is when they kill off characters with potential. Once again returning to the mess that was Countdown... take the Jokester. I liked the Jokester. It seems like a fair number of people did. I thought that he'd make an awesome addition to the DCU. But then they killed him, I believe, only about a half-dozen issues after introducing him. Why? There was no reason to kill him. They created an interesting, likable character, and then just, poof, he's gone forever. Why?!

This is, of course, completely leaving to the side entire series of issues devoted to nothing but the opportunity to kill characters. It doesn't make any sense. Many of the characters they killed were long-standing. They'd been used in stories off and on for decades. Left alone, they very likely would have featured in stories for decades to come. Killing them off is a waste, and a disservice to future writers.

*sigh* This is a rant that's been brewing for a long time, but it was really set off when I decided to browse through the Justice League: Cry for Justice mini this evening. It was all a pointless (completely pointless) bloodbath. They ripped off Roy's arm and killed his daughter. For no reason but shock value. And on top of that, they've killed off Prometheus. I swear, if they keep killing off villains at the rate they've been going, they'll soon have none left. And that's one top of the faceless body count that is at least in the thousands.

It's just frustrating, you know? Every character that DC or Marvel creates has potential, has readers who care about them and want to see what happens to them. Killing characters without a means of resurrection is just a waste.

P.S.: I'm still waiting for Jean Grey to come back to life. Come on Marvel, I'm waiting. You've made your point. I mean, Jean coming back is an inevitability, but if you're going to be stubborn, at least give us Madelyne back...
tarod45: (tired)
So, I decided to start trolling through some rec lists for J2 fics, particularly Big Bangs, opening promising looking fics in new tabs. Yeah, the tabs got completely out of control, and I now have a bookmark folder with thirty-nine entries.

Keep in mind that these are roughly thirty-nine Big Bangs, or otherwise quite long fics. Most of them are over 20k words, and a few of them are over 100k.

This is getting a little out of hand. No way am I going to have time to read all of this. On top of school, and the actual, honest-to-god books I'm in the middle of. I'd really like to be able to finish The Book of Lost Things.

I'm so tired right now, I just can't think about it. Thank god tomorrow (er, today?) is a holiday. No class for me... though I do have to do homework. Guh.

Well. Bed, for now. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
tarod45: Food! (food)
So, I seem to have broken through the block. I have four J2 AUs in my delicious account, and two more waiting in tabs, and I feel only very vaguely guilty. Fortunately, they're all massively AU, so I'm not in danger of breaking my brain. Really, as long as I make a determined effort to pretend that these people are all completely fictional characters, I'm alright.

I was rather surprised to discover that I really liked the chef!AU. Who'd'a'thunk, right? Of course, the fact that I'm kinda enamored of Top Chef (and also Hell's Kitchen; don't judge me) probably explains some of it.

And now, it is time to think about dinner. I really want a burger. However, I'm not going to be home over the weekend, and I still have most of a two-day-old rotisserie chicken, and a nearly-week-old carton of grape tomatoes that I really need to eat. Like, now. And also that already-opened bag of salad greens. I suppose I'm having another salad with chicken on top. Yay. (For the record, I like chicken onna salad. Just, you know, not almost every night for two weeks.)

But, best of all: NO CLASS ON MONDAY! HA! I get to put off my Strategic Cost homework even longer.
tarod45: Sam's in shock (oh god)
I would like to announce to the world at large that: I AM ALIVE! Dear god.

There was some question during the drive home whether or not I'd be able to say that by the end of the evening. The roads out there are brutal. I have a tension headache so bad that I'm actually dizzy.

There is no point to this post except that I genuinely feel that I have narrowly avoided death, and that seems a momentous thing not to tell anyone about. Yes, I know I'm a Southern wimp, and I say that makes it all the more of a miracle that I survived.

I may be going to visit my aunt on Saturday, unless the roads are as much of a horrible, horrible mess as they are right now, in which case I reserve the right to hide my head under my pillow and never come out. Or, you know, at least until the snow melts.

I think maybe I'm going to cancel my appointment with my adviser tomorrow morning, and just... not go anywhere.
tarod45: (tired)
Well, perhaps I'm drunk on non-concentrate apple juice. It's heady stuff.

tarod45: Dean being adorable. (cute)
So Cute TA got me thinking about actors who have similar magnificent schnozes. Peter Wingfield (Methos from Highlander) and David Duchovnny (you know the one) both spring to mind. But, ah, the nasal ideal, the perfect honker, that belongs to Adrien Brody. I recall going to see the King Kong remake back when it was in theaters. It was a largely forgettable experience, and I was left with only three impressions:

1. The T-Rex in Jurassic Park was scarier.
2. Giant bugs are not to be tolerated. (Ew! Ew! Ick!)
3. The actual star of the movie was Adrien Brody's nose.

Seriously, I walked out of the theater composing odes to Adrien Brody's nose. It was so magnificent. It had a presence all its own. It outshone everything else on the screen.

Don't worry. My family have already informed me that I'm kinda nuts.

I can't help it. Big, beak-y noses are hot.

Good grief

Dec. 13th, 2009 09:00 pm
tarod45: (bright idea)
So, my group partner and I had to give a presentation for our Entrepreneurial Project (and, really, genuinely enlightening as the project has been, the most useful thing I've learned is how to spell entrepreneurial), and I think we actually did a really good job. We were confident, we didn't ramble, we didn't say "like" every other word, we didn't mumble. It was good. However, due to a combination of the other groups all going long on their presentations, and technical difficulties on our part, the professor had to leave before we could even start. So we gave our awesome presentation to the TA, instead. This after the professor commented on how the other three groups needed to work on their presentation skills (see list of things we didn't do). Such is the story of my life.

Said TA then asked me to email him a copy of my spreadsheets. Which I am about to do. And I am debating whether to ask him if he'd like to catch a bite to eat some time. Because he seems very nice, and I kinda got the impression he might be interested, and also, he's got a nose to die for. Seriously, I have a thing for noses, and his? Yum.

Alas, he's probably younger than I am. This is not an unforgivable sin, or anything. I'm just kinda on the prowl for a guy at least my age, preferably a couple of years older. Just 'cause. Unfortunately, those are a little hard to come by just at the moment: they're all off in the work force or in grad school. Y'know, where I'd like to be. Should be. Whatever.

Is it inappropriate to ask your TA who, as the only witness to your presentation, has influence on your grade, out on a date? Yeah. Yeah, it is. Oh well. Maybe next week, when the grade is in.

Hm. I've never asked a guy out before. Never had to really think about the logistics.
tarod45: Sam's in shock (oh god)
Hm. Well, so far my foray into RPF has been something of a non-starter. I've gotten about a third of the way through [livejournal.com profile] fleshflutter's "Someone You Might Have Been," but I've been stalled for almost a month. I've got [livejournal.com profile] lotrabc's J2 OZ AU open in tabs, but it's been there for weeks, and it's perhaps telling that it's buried so deeply in my tab trees that it took over a minute to find it. Mind you, I have something like fifty tabs open at the moment, so losing something is easy to do. Other than those two fics (and [livejournal.com profile] leonidaslion's very brief J2 fantasy AU, which I did manage to finish), I haven't even made an attempt to search out any RPF.

Part of it is that I'm still very uncomfortable evening thinking too hard about non-AU RPF, and so I hesitate to look very closely at J2 rec lists. Part of it is that, well, it seems like a lot of the fics I'm willing to look at are either college/high school AUs, or completely off-the-wall AUs. Weird stuff I'm fine with, but stuff like ice skaters? I'm just not interested.

Oh well. I suppose that'll be something for me to work on over Christmas break. Along with the knitting that I have to finish up for the parental unit's present. And needing to (again, because I'm unbelievably anal) redo the tags on my Delicious account. And get some more progress done on Dragon Age: Origins. And get some reading (of actual books) done. And cater to my step-mother and her obsession with doing stuff. Did someone say something about Christmas break being restful? Dear zombie Jesus on a pogo stick.

So what am I actually doing? Why, watching spn fanvids. Of course.

I am, just occasionally, a dumbass.
